SHARON WATTS ~ ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an artist /archivist who creates work of personal meaning at any given juncture of my life that needs both hands-on and spiritual attention.
Born in Harrisburg, PA, I moved to Manhattan at age 18 to study fashion design and illustration at Parsons School of Design. I lived and worked in the city for 30 years as a freelance illustrator for The New York Times and many other clients before moving to Beacon, NY in 2000. After 9/11, deep in a new world of both extreme loss and change, I reflected in writing as well as visual art, trying to make some sense of my “new normal.”
Assemblage and collage art connect the process of memory to tactile material imbued with sentimental meaning, as well as that originally destined to be mere ephemera. Photography is a way to capture what might be glanced over or never even noticed, or gone in the blink of an eye, (or a lifetime). Watercolor is part study, part meditation.
Fragility and strength are dominant themes, with bits of whimsical detail providing punctuation to what I try to express in my work.
